Staircases are already tricky spaces for installations, with tight corners, varying elevations, and difficult access points. Adding the heavily textured surface of a cinder block wall into the equation only increased the complexity. The artist’s bold, vibrant design featured intricate patterns and sweeping lines that needed to flow seamlessly up all four stories without losing impact or clarity.
The challenge was clear: how do we install vinyl decals on a rough, uneven surface, maintain the integrity of the design across such a vast vertical space, and ensure the decals adhere securely for the long haul?
Before starting the installation, we took several crucial steps to prepare the space and guarantee the highest quality result.
1. Surface Cleaning: A thorough cleaning of the staircase wall was our first priority. We removed dust, debris, and any other particles that could interfere with the adhesion of the vinyl. The texture of the cinder block meant we had to be extra diligent to ensure every crevice was free of dirt.
2. Choosing the Right Vinyl Material: Not all vinyl is created equal, especially when it comes to textured surfaces. For this project, we used a high-performance, conformable vinyl specifically designed to adhere to rough surfaces. This material is thicker and more flexible, allowing it to mold to the texture of the cinder blocks while maintaining the sharpness and vibrancy of the artwork.
3. Strategic Layout and Alignment: Given the size and scale of the design, we meticulously planned the sizing, spacing, and layout of the vinyl decals before installation. The artwork had to line up perfectly from the ground floor to the top of the staircase, ensuring that the design flowed naturally without interruption.
With the groundwork laid, we were ready to tackle the installation. Given the scale and the challenges of working on a vertical staircase wall, our team used specialized techniques to ensure precision and durability.

After days of hard work and precision installation, the once-plain staircase wall was completely transformed. The artist’s bold, energetic design now stretches across all four stories of the staircase, turning the once-utilitarian space into a vertical gallery. The bright, vibrant colors and intricate patterns bring energy to the space, making the climb up the stairs an engaging and inspiring experience.
The vinyl decals adhered beautifully to the textured cinder block, with the conformable material allowing the artwork to flow naturally over the rough surface without losing any of its clarity or vibrancy.
